What is Dry Shampoo and How Do You Use It?

R+Co describes Death Valley as, “Not your granny’s dry shampoo. Death Valley is the quickest way to get volume and body into your hair.”

True to the description, Death Valley dry shampoo is not like other dry shampoos on the market. For one thing, it won’t leave any residue on dark hair and can easily give you an extra couple days between washes without making your hair a greasy, musty mess.

Before we get into our own overview of what dry shampoo is and how to use it, here’s an explainer and demonstration video from R+Co using Death Valley.

Overview of R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo

What is Dry Shampoo?

Dry shampoo is essentially an oil absorbing powder that will soak up the excess oil and grease in your hair in between wet washes, allowing you to go for longer without washing your hair. R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo is different from other dry shampoos on the market quite simply because it does this job better without the negative aspects. Specifically:

  • It’s vegan and cruelty free
  • Won’t leave any white residue on dark hair
  • Absorbs oil exceptionally well
  • Smells amazing — a combination of bergamot, wild fig, cyclamen, lotus flower, cedarwood and tonka beans
  • Instantly adds volume and texture to greasy unwashed hair

Ingredients of R+Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo

  • Rice protein — this protein moisturizes and improves hair’s elasticity. Rice protein is known for its benefits in both skin and hair care, with the biggest benefit being a significant increase in hair volume.  Rice protein also adds elasticity while strengthening the hair to assist with repair and damage prevention.  It’s also been shown to increase moisture and shine with regular use. R+Co make a point to mention this particular ingredient is sourced from Brazil. Not sure why that matters but I guess it’s braggable.
  • Vitamin E — antioxidant that helps strengthen and nourish the hair, restoring luster and shine.
  • Silica — removes and absorbs excess oil.
  • Pro-Vitamin B5 — conditioning agent that thickens and builds volume.

Who should use it?

This is perfect for you if you only wash your hair once or twice a week (which is what we recommend). It’s also great if you have naturally oily hair or if you work out regularly but don’t want to wash your hair afterward. R+Co says it’s good for “easy, big, messy Bardot (or Bon Jovi) hair,” which is as good of a reason as any in our books.

Why use dry shampoo instead of washing your hair?

This is one of the most common questions about dry shampoo that we get and rightfully so; after all, isn’t shampoo something you put in wet hair to clean it? Whereas traditional shampoo is also often a verb to describe the act of washing your hair, dry shampoo gets its name more from the end-result of what is perceived to be clean (or shampooed) hair.

All that to say: use dry shampoo when you want the benefits of traditional shampoo, like volume, texture, nice smell, etc. without having to wet, wash & dry your hair.

It’s also the perfect solution to the oil and grease that builds up throughout the week if you’re only washing once or twice a week.

When to use dry shampoo

Before bed, after the gym and before going out are all perfectly valid times when dry shampoo proves its worth. It can also be used when there’s a buildup of oil, grease or even other hair products that have lost their hold. It will provide instant grip and volume, allowing for quick styling when in a rush.

It can be tempting to just keep blasting your hair with dry shampoo instead of washing it, but we recommend a maximum application of twice as anything more than that and you’re just adding bulk to your hair and clog your hair follicles.

How to use dry shampoo

To get the best results with dry shampoo you should spray it from about 10 inches away from the root of your hair. Anything closer and you risk excess build up in spots. It’s also important to use just enough to get some results that you can work with, then if you want to add more after you can — like all hair products, it’s easier to add than to take away once it’s on. Once it’s sprayed on, let it sit for a minute or so before massaging it in and brushing for maximum volume and affect.
